- Knots are common but tightly held and decorative
- Durability above ground class 1 (life expectancy more than 40 years)
- Durability below ground class 2 (life expectancy in ground 15-25 years) - Naturally resistant to termites
- Naturally resistant to decay - Although technically a softwood, it is one of the hardest conifers in the world, with a Janka rating of 6.1 kN (for comparison Radiata Pine rates at 3.3kN, and Victorian Ash a hardwood rates at 4.49kN)
